Feeding and Swallowing Disorder (Dysphagia)

Feeding and Swallowing Disorder (Dysphagia)

Dysphagia, which is the inability to eat or swallow properly, can have a detrimental effect on one's overall well-being and quality of life.

Dynamics Feeding & Swallowing specialises in diagnosing and remediating feeding and swallowing challenges facing adults. Our highly trained and experienced team of Speech Therapists is dedicated to helping each individual achieve breakthroughs in this area of challenge and lead a fulfilled life — through carefully designed intervention plans and person-centered care and support.

What is Dysphagia?

Swallowing requires the coordination of many muscles in the mouth, throat and oesophagus to ensure that the food and liquid we consume enter the right way into our stomach. A breakdown in the function of any of these muscles can result in a swallowing difficulty, also known as dysphagia.

Individuals with dysphagia have difficulties eating and drinking safely. They are at risk of aspiration pneumonia, a condition that occurs when a foreign material ingested (e.g. food or fluids) enters the airway, leading to the infection and inflammation of the lungs.

Adult choked on food

How We Can Help

Adult choked on food
  • Oral motor function and swallowing assessment.
  • Modification of food and/or fluid consistencies to improve safety and facilitate ease of swallowing.
  • Swallowing exercises to develop strength, timing, and coordination of the lips, tongue, cheek and jaw and throat muscles for efficient eating and drinking.
  • Feeding techniques (e.g. postural changes) and strategies (e.g. airway protection techniques) to help with eating and drinking.
  • Tracheostomy management.
  • Where indicated, further diagnostic tests, such as the Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VSS) or Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow (FEES) may be recommended.

What is a Communication Disorder?

A communication disorder is a dysfunction in the ability to understand, process and express ideas or information via verbal and non-verbal means. Individuals may suffer from one or a combination of communication disorders.

Conditions We Treat

Aphasia
Aphasia (language disorder)

Individuals with aphasia find difficulty in understanding (receptive) and/or expressing (expressive) themselves in speech or writing.

Dysphonia
Dysphonia (voice disorder)

Dysphonia occurs when the voice quality, pitch and loudness are affected. Hoarseness, persistent voice disturbances or discomfort when talking can affect one's quality of life.

Dysfluency
Dysfluency (fluency disorder)

Individuals with dysfluency (stuttering) may continuously repeat sounds or words, stretch a sound out for a long time or have a hard time getting a word out.

Dysarthria and Apraxia of Speech
Dysarthria and Apraxia of Speech (motor speech disorders)

Dysarthria occurs as a result of muscle weakness of the articulators, such as the jaw and tongue. In Apraxia of speech, the individual's ability to coordinate muscle movements is impaired, resulting in a difficulty to sequence word sounds for production.

Cognitive-Communication Disorder
Cognitive-Communication Disorder

This disorder arises when communication is affected by cognitive impairment. Individuals with cognitive-communication disorders may find themselves having difficulties with attention, memory, planning, reasoning and/or executive functions, among others. Both verbal and non-verbal communications can be disrupted.

How We Can Help

Depending on the types of communication difficulties (e.g. speech, language or voice-related), our Speech Therapist will administer the appropriate assessment methods to determine the severity and nature of the communication impairment. Where appropriate, we may recommend Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods to facilitate communication for suitable individuals. We will then prescribe an appropriate therapy plan for the subsequent sessions.
