Swallowing requires the coordination of many muscles in the mouth, throat and oesophagus to ensure that the food and liquid we consume enter the right way into our stomach. A breakdown in the function of any of these muscles can result in a swallowing difficulty, also known as dysphagia.
Individuals with dysphagia have difficulties eating and drinking safely. They are at risk of aspiration pneumonia, a condition that occurs when a foreign material ingested (e.g. food or fluids) enters the airway, leading to the infection and inflammation of the lungs.
A communication disorder is a dysfunction in the ability to understand, process and express ideas or information via verbal and non-verbal means. Individuals may suffer from one or a combination of communication disorders.
Individuals with aphasia find difficulty in understanding (receptive) and/or expressing (expressive) themselves in speech or writing.
Dysphonia occurs when the voice quality, pitch and loudness are affected. Hoarseness, persistent voice disturbances or discomfort when talking can affect one's quality of life.
Individuals with dysfluency (stuttering) may continuously repeat sounds or words, stretch a sound out for a long time or have a hard time getting a word out.
Dysarthria occurs as a result of muscle weakness of the articulators, such as the jaw and tongue. In Apraxia of speech, the individual's ability to coordinate muscle movements is impaired, resulting in a difficulty to sequence word sounds for production.
This disorder arises when communication is affected by cognitive impairment. Individuals with cognitive-communication disorders may find themselves having difficulties with attention, memory, planning, reasoning and/or executive functions, among others. Both verbal and non-verbal communications can be disrupted.
Depending on the types of communication difficulties (e.g. speech, language or voice-related), our Speech Therapist will administer the appropriate assessment methods to determine the severity and nature of the communication impairment. Where appropriate, we may recommend Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods to facilitate communication for suitable individuals. We will then prescribe an appropriate therapy plan for the subsequent sessions.
